M. Yunus Rafiq currently holds a position as an assistant professor of anthropology at New York University, Shanghai. Rafiq received his Ph.D. in anthropology with a focus on medical anthropology from Brown University in 2017 and his M.A. in African Studies from Yale University in 2010. He has received several research awards including the Franklin Fellowship from the American Philosophical Society (2022), Harvard Kennedy School Research Fellow (2015 - 2016), Columbia University - Ifakara Institute Research Fellow (2013 - 2015), Fulbright Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Award (2015), Wenner Gren Dissertation Fieldwork Grant (2014), and Jacob Javits (2013). He is currently working on his book manuscript that examines how public health NGOs are using Muslim religious leaders (shehe) to improve the use of family planning and maternal and child health services in rural Tanzania. His next research project examines the semantic landscapes of cancer in coastal and mainland Tanzania.
