Addressing global adolescent mental health from a culturally- and contextually-informed prevention approach

Adolescent mental health has reached a crisis level globally. The situation is exacerbated by a shortfall of mental health professionals. In China, for instance, there are fewer than 500 full-time child and adolescent psychiatrists for the country (Wu et al., 2019). Most countries worldwide are similarly facing a surge in adolescent mental health problems combined with significant treatment gaps.

In this context, Dr. Hock will discuss her work to better understand and address the complex issues affecting adolescent mental health in several low- and middle-income countries. In particular, she has focused on family factors, intergenerational trauma, and their interactions with societal and cultural frameworks. She will also describe her emerging work on the development and implementation of a school-based prevention approach for student mental health at DKU, informed by this earlier research. She aims to contribute to the body of knowledge of school-based approaches with qualitative, quantitative, and community-based participatory research methods that enable intervention responsiveness to culture and context.
